    Comprehensive:
    Includes curriculum, lesson-specific art materials for classes, teacher/parent volunteer training, and ongoing support via your school’s Art in Action coordinator.

    Innovative: Through the Art in Action Teach website, teachers can access online tutorials that provide in-depth reviews of the lessons. Each tutorial includes videos, downloads, and other resources such as step-by-step teaching aids and discussion questions.

    Culturally diverse: The lessons across grades K-8 represent cultural diversity and a history span of 17,000 years, from cave paintings to contemporary art and include a survey of art from cultures around the world including African, Greek, Roman, Chinese, Indian and Japanese among others.

  • The curriculum is aligned with National Standards for Visual Arts, most state Visual Arts Standards and strongly supports key elements of the Common Core.

  • The base program includes a complete visual arts curriculum with 12 lessons for each grade from K through 8. The classroom subscription provides access to the online lesson tutorials for all teachers and volunteers who will be in the classroom. Webinar training and ongoing support is also included.

  • ARTboxes contain program-specific paper, paints, and other art supplies needed to teach lessons
    Paper Plus Boxes contain program-specific paper supplies and other consumables, such as templates and visual aids

  • The program easily adapts to the school’s specific situation. You can teach as many of the 12 lessons in a program level as you wish. The lessons are designed, however, to be sequential which each lesson, and each grade level, building upon knowledge and competency from prior lessons and grade levels.

  • Lessons take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes. Some schools teach a lesson in 60 minutes and others split a lesson into two 45-minute sessions. We also offer ideas for integrating the lessons into other subject areas.

  • Art in Action trains classroom teachers, art teachers and/or parent volunteers to teach the program. Training takes place in the fall at our Redwood City headquarters or via online resources available once a school has subscribed to the program.

  • A school’s Art in Action Coordinator is the liaison between the school and Art in Action and is typically a parent or teacher with a strong interest in the program. The Coordinator organizes the program at his or her school and often recruits a team of docent volunteers at school functions and in the school’s newsletter. The volunteers can attend in-person or webinar group trainings to learn how to effectively teach the Art in Action program.

  • During Art in Action training workshops, you will …

    • Learn how to ask interpretive questions, how to help students understand each work of art, and how to transition from discussion to demonstration of the project.

    • Learn various sketching, drawing and clay techniques.

    • Learn about different art mediums and how to create mini-versions of several projects.

    • Learn tips on encouraging students to express their observations during discussions.

    • Learn about techniques to set up, clean up, and store materials.

    • Learn methods to successfully integrate lessons into the general curriculum.

  • The annual subscription provides the school with the right to use the Art in Action program during the school year for the grade levels and classrooms specified at purchase or renewal. Furthermore, schools receive access to online resources, group training, workshops, ongoing school support, and the opportunity to purchase custom training or lesson-specific art supplies.

  • Schools and other organizations effectively utilize the lessons in K-8 after school and summer programs. Art in Action is proud to partner with afterschool providers such as Boys & Girls Club to bring our programs to students during extended learning time. Contact sales for more information.

  • The cost depends on the number of classrooms teaching the program and the optional purchase of art materials. View our products to find out more.

  • Programs are often funded through the school district, a school’s curriculum budget or through the school’s PTA/PTO.

  • Occasionally we receive a grant for a specific purpose, and we then seek schools that qualify. You can also apply to be a recipient of the Art in Action Scholarship.
